How to clean up your web browser

The web browser is a very important application for many people, so it’s imperative that it’s kept up-to-date and in tip-top shape.
All manner of web browser extras can accumulate over time and, while some may be useful, most just get in the way and some can pose potential security risks.
That’s why routine web browser spring-cleaning is advisable — once every six months should be enough.
Disabling unnecessary browser adds-ons and clearing out information saved automatically is enough to keep things running smoothly, but don’t forget to also check that you’re also using the latest version of your chosen browser.
The steps below are for Internet Explorer, but other web browsers all offer similar features.

Step 1: Check your web browser version

Step 1: Check your web browser version

The first thing to check is that you’re using the latest version of your web browser. Updates are released all the time, both to add new features and to fix security holes, so using an out-of-date version can pose a serious risk.
The easiest way to keep Internet Explorer up to date is to enable automatic updates. Click Tools and select About Internet Explorer, click to enable the Install new versions automatically option and then click Close.
BT has an enhanced version of IE 11 with extra functionaltiy, which you can upgrade to here.

Step 2: Update Internet Explorer with Windows Update

Step 2: Update Internet Explorer with Windows Update

If your version of Internet Explorer lacks the automatic updates option, open the Windows Start menu and type windows update into the search box. When the ‘Windows Update’ dialog box opens, click Check for update.
The latest version of Internet Explorer (if available) will be shown under the resulting ‘Important updates’ list.  If there’s more than one, select the most recent version and click OK.

Step 3: Review Internet Explorer’s Toolbars

Step 3: Review Internet Explorer’s Toolbars

Internet Explorer Toolbars (not the one built into the browser itself), whilecan slow down web browsing, if you've got too many, installing too may also eat into the space available for viewing a web page, particularly on a low-resolution monitor.
To disable a Toolbar, click Internet Explorer’s Tools menu icon and select Manage Add-ons.

Step 4: Disable unwanted Toolbars

Step 4: Disable unwanted Toolbars

When the dialog box opens, select Toolbars and Extensions. Select the Toolbar on the right to disable (you just need to disable the ‘Toolbar’ entry - the associated ‘Helper’ will be disabled automatically) and click the Disable button. Confirm this in the new dialog box that opens, then move onto the next Toolbar, if necessary.  If you are a BT customer you may want to keep the BT Toolbar, which contains quick links to BT email and popular websites.

Step 5: Disable Internet Explorer’s Accelerators

Step 5: Disable Internet Explorer’s Accelerators

Internet Explorer Accelerators - adds-ons that speed up searches with web page content - can also clutter up the web browser, but these are easily removed in the same dialog box opened in Step 3. Select accelerators in the left of the ‘Manage Add-ons’ dialog box to see the list of installed Accelerators, then select and disable or remove each one in turn on the right.

Step 6: Check what Internet Explorer saves while browsing

Step 6: Check what Internet Explorer saves while browsing

Internet Explorer also saves previously visited web addresses, usernames and passwords for web sites you need to log into. These can speed up web browsing, but the lists can also get clogged with mistyped entries, and usernames and passwords you may have since changed.
To clear these lists, select Tools - Internet Options. Click the Content tab on the ‘Internet Options’ dialog box that opens and then click the Settings button in the ‘AutoComplete’ section.

Step 7: Stop Internet Explorer from saving certain information

Step 7: Stop Internet Explorer from saving certain information

When the ‘AutoComplete Settings’ dialog box has opened, you’ll see a list of information that Internet Explorer saves as you browse the web. You can deselect any of these options to prevent Internet Explorer saving them in future, without affecting the information it’s remembered so far.

Step 8: Delete Internet Explorer’s saved information

Step 8: Delete Internet Explorer’s saved information

To clear any or all of this saved information, start by clicking Delete AutoComplete history.
Leave the default selections as they are on the ‘Delete Browsing History’ dialog box that opens, but it’s worth reading through each option to understand what they refer to. Click Delete to clear the selected options, then click OK on the two previous dialog boxes to close them.

Make Chrome’s Download Manager use less space in the browser like Firefox

Whenever you download a file using the Google Chrome web browser, it is displayed in a bar at the bottom of the browser window.
This bar remains open until you close it, and while reappear with every new download that you make.
While some may like how Chrome handles downloads, others may prefer a solution that requires less interaction and takes up less screen estate.
One option that you have is to run a download manager which taps into Chrome directly, so that all downloads are automatically bypassing Chrome's internal download manager.
If you do not want to install a download manager, your next best bet is the Downloadr extension for Google Chrome.
It gets rid of the fat download bar at the bottom of the screen, and moves all downloads behind a single icon that it places in Chrome's main toolbar.
Actually, this is very similar to how downloads are handled in the Firefox web browser nowadays.
The download icon changes colors indicating whether downloads are currently processed or completed. When you click on the icon, you see a list of all downloads that you made in the browser.
chrome download manager
All downloads are displayed in chronological order, with downloads that are still running displayed at the very top.
Each download is listed with its file name and size, and an option to show it in the folder it was downloaded to.
You can cancel any running download, and check up on the progress made so far. Here you see the current download speed, the total and downloaded size of the file, and the remaining time if the download speed does not change.
There is also a button to clear all downloads, and a double-click on any file here opens it by the default file handler on the system.
There is one downside to this though. Chrome displays a warning when you download certain file types, .exe files for example. That warning is also displayed in the new interface. But, you only see it if you click on the download link.
Depending on how many downloads you have made here in the meantime, you may have to click multiple times on the keep the download action as it is displayed here individually for each download.
It is not such a big issue, but an option to disable the warning altogether would come in quite handy for users who download lots of files that cause the notification to appear. That's however likely a Chrome setting that extensions cannot tamper with in any way.

Verdict

Downloadr moves the Chrome download bar from the bottom of the browser screen behind a single icon in the top toolbar of the browser. This saves you from having to click on the x icon of the download bar each time you do not need it anymore.

Epic Browser: a privacy-focused web browser based on Chromium

Epic Browser is not the first nor will it be the last Chromium-based web browser that aims to improve user privacy. When Google Chrome was released years ago, third party Chromium-based browsers appeared shortly thereafter that offered most of what Chrome had to offer, but without several of the tracking or privacy-invading features that Google's browser shipped with.
The majority of those browsers are still around, and Epic Browser will have to compete against them and Chrome, and probably other web browsers as well.
The homepage of Epic Browser focuses on privacy, first explaining how you are being tracked on the Internet, and then how Epic Browser helps you protect yourself when you are browsing the Internet.

In addition to that, it more or less defaults to private browsing mode by preventing the recording of history, caches, passwords, pre-fetching and other features that may reveal information about the user.
That is however still not enough. It clears all browsing data on exit by default, making sure that any information that were needed during the session are removed from the system in the process.
As you may have noticed, this may impact how you work with the browser as you cannot make use of features that you may have come to rely on.
The developers of Epic Browser have added features to the browser that neither Chrome nor Chromium ship with. This includes a one-click US proxy server (powered by Spotflux) that users can make use of to hide their original IP address when they are browsing on the Internet (yes, this includes access to US-only services such as Hulu), integrated ad blocking and tracker blocking, automatic blocking of third party cookies, and automatic use of https versions of websites if provided.
It is interesting to note that Epic will enable the proxy by default on Google to prevent the tracking of your IP address on the site. What more? It blocks the sending of the referral header when you use the search engine so that third party websites do not know what your search term was that led you to their website.
Another interesting feature is the umbrella icon that you can use for quick access to several core features such as ad and third party cookie blocking.

Downsides

You are probably wondering about downsides of using the browser. The first thing that comes to mind are the features that you cannot use, like spell checking, auto-translation or session restore. Some features are left for the user to decide, like the saving of passwords in the browser, while others cannot be altered in any form or way.
The address bar search provider is set to epicsearch.in. According to the developers, revenue generated here is used to support the browser and services it provides. They furthermore state that the ads displayed here are only based on a user's search query and a rough location check.

Closing Words

It is too early to tell if Epic Browser will make a big splash or remain a niche browser that appeals to a privacy-focused audience.
I wish it would provide users with choice in regards to some of the features as it would improve the browser's usability. It would then be the user's decision to sacrifice some privacy for convenience.
The developers have promised to release the source code of the browser soon. For now though, it is not available.
