Tip of the Week: Behind the ‘Pin Tab’ Feature of Google’s Chrome Browser
By J.D. BIERSDORFER

The “Pin Tab” feature of the Google Chrome browser neatly reduces page tabs down to just the site’s icon — which can make it easier to switch between screens full of open sites. To shrink a tab down to its icon, right-click on it and choose Pin Tab. While this makes room for plenty of open tabs, it also hides the number of unread messages that is normally displayed on the full tab of an open Gmail page.

To keep space-saving Gmail users on top of new mail, developers in the Gmail Labs have created a special icon that displays the number of unread messages right on the small tab’s Gmail logo. To turn it on, log into Gmail from the browser and click on the Gmail Labs small green beaker icon at the top of the page. Scroll down the Available Labs list, click on the Enable button next to “Unread messages icon” and click on the Save Changes button at the top or bottom of the page. The setting also works in recent versions of Chrome and the Firefox browser.
